Abstract

A field experiment was conducted at farmer's field under on farm trial during 2011-12, in Jorhat district of Assam, to study the impact of post shooting application of urea and sulphate of potash on the improvement of bunch weight of banana cultivar Borjahaji. The denavelled distal stalk end of the bunch was fed with urea, sulphate of potash blended with fresh cowdung soon after the fruit set. The results showed that when the bunch was fed with urea (7.5g), sulphate of potash (7.5g) blended with 500 g fresh cowdung (T₄) all the yield attributing characters viz., length of fingers, weight of fingers of first hand, weight of fingers of last hand, girth of fingers, weight of first hand, weight of last hand and bunch weight were maximum as compared to denavelling and application of cowdung only (T₂) and application of urea and cowdung at denavelled distal stalk end (T₃). The minimum of all these characters and bunch weight were obtained in control (T₁) where male bud was retained till harvest. The results revealed that the nutrients moved from the blend into the bunch and significantly enhanced the weight of fruits and bunch. When the bunch was fed with urea 7.5 g, sulphate of potash 7.5 g blended with cowdung 500 g (T₄) the response was 34.77 per cent, 11 per cent and 5.9 per cent increase in weight of bunch over the treatments T₁, T₂ and T₃, respectively.

Abstract

A field study was conducted at farmers field of Jorhat, Assam during 2010-11 to evaluate the efficacy of three commercial biopesticides, two based on insect pathogenic fungi viz., Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium anisopliae and one botanical-Neem oil in comparison with chemical-cypermethrin against the tomato fruit borer (Helicoverpa armigera). The study revealed the reduction in fruit damage was upto 92.20 per cent in cypermethrin treated plot followed by 91.12 per cent, 88.74 per cent and 87.01 per cent in the plots treated with Neem oil, B. Bassiana and M. Anisopliae, respectively due to H. armigera larvae over control. The study showed that neem oil was nearly as effective as cypermethrin in reducing fruit damage leading to increased yield. The highest increase in yield over control was noticed in cypermethrin treated plots (62.85%) followed by neem oil treated plots (41.83%). The entomopathogenic fungi- Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium anisopliae could be effectively used as pest management option in production of organic tomato to reduce the pest population below economic threshold level and increased yield.

Abstract

X-ray diffraction (XRD) and infrared (IR) spectral analyses of the Lakadong Limestone, Meghalaya indicate calcite as its dominant mineral phase. Association of dolomite at the base and presence of silica at the top of the sequence is evidenced from the spectra. A significant relationship between CaO content and the peak intensity of IR-spectra is found and needs standardisation before it can be utilised for rapid estimation of quality of limestone and can be an alternative for different time consuming analytical procedures. Stable isotope of δ¹³C {0.63 to 1.12‰( av.0.87±0.01‰)} points to enrichment of heavier C isotope and δ¹⁸O values {-7.34 to-10.55‰ (av.-9.06±0.01‰) ) to lighter O isotope enrichment. Isotopic grid analysis confirms the marine origin for the limestone. Biochemical fractionation along with diagenetic reorganisation might have played critical roles in controlling the isotopic ratios of this limestone.

Abstract

The Therria - Lakadong unit forms a part of the Upper Assam basin explored by the Oil India Limited. Petrographic study on 47 subsurface samples drawn from 3548.5m to 4377m in five well sections has revealed that the sandstone type is dominantly wacke, minor arenite and calcareous sandstone with quartz content varying from 31.4 to 82.7%. The other constituents are feldspar, rock fragments, cement, matrix, mica, opaques, glauconite and fossils. The limestone comprises sparry calcite, micrite, bioclasts, peloids, quartz, opaques and glauconite. The heavy minerals recorded are zircon, rutile, titanite, epidote, garnet, hornblende, enstatite, hypersthene, augite and kyanite with traces of diopside, sillimanite, brookite and monazite. The heavy mineral assemblage suggests that the sediments were derived from igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. Based on IR and XRD studies, the clay minerals were identified as kaolinite, illite, montmorillonite and chlorite, which together with glauconite, suggest a nearshore depositional environment. Biosparite indicates high-energy conditions in the environment. Although some of the original porosity is lost at depth due to pressure effects, the sandstone in general has good porosity.

Abstract

We setup an EMG amplifier for multi channel capturing of EMG signal with special reference to Writer's cramp (WC) from the subject having input impedance greater than 100 MegOhm(M ). By using this setup we gathered EMG- EMG data (signals) from WC subjects (diseased conditions) hand muscles: ECR and ECU, FCR and FCU, followed by fifth muscle using a set-of-five innocuous micro-wire-electrodes (50μ) in each-subject. We then assessed coherence and conducted chi-square (χ²) tests on these data in eight subjects of concordant(C) group and 4 subjects of discordant (D) group of right-hand-writing-signal (RHWS) and in left-hand-writing-signal (LHWS)) studied. We compared the difference between flexor-aspect-of-forearm and extensor-aspect-of-intrinsic hand-muscles. This showed significant coherence in both concordant and discordant groups of WC mirror-movements (MMs) in mirror-Dystonia. These observations suggest that the nature of EMG-EMG coherence in dystonic WC may be constrained by the descendingmotor- systems, both in terms of their anatomical-distribution and their frequency-characteristics. In our computation, the coherence showed symmetry along the diagonals in graphs. We thus state that, this study showed significant quantifiable EMG differences in the signals/waveforms seen while writing with the right and left hands between those WC subjects with concordant MMs (C group) versus those with discordant MMs (D group).
